Shadow

"I hacked my way through six forests until the moon woke up inside me."

— Lalla

Our world is calling for spirituality that is grounded, compassionate and responsible, one that does not bypass or lend itself to self-indulgence or performative awakening.

The Buddhist teaching on The Six Realms offers a powerful map for this needed sobering up. It introduces us to, and trains us to recognise and transform deep-seated archetypical patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour trapping us humans in states of mind that causes suffering for ourselves and in our relation to others, such as eg. jealousy, aggression, and spiritual bypassing. Working earnestly with these unseen architectures of the mind - these shadows shaping our struggles and illusions - we can more readily access our basic sanity and humanity, and catch ourselves from spiralling into habitual suffering and delusion — Making us more available to life and each other.

At the same time, the universal nature of the realms reminds us of our shared humanity. By recognising these patterns in ourselves, we cultivate greater compassion for others. As such the realm teachings can also acts to dissolve division and fostering a deeper sense of unity and responsibility for the world we create together.

The Six Realms

The realms aren't places we go they're states of mind we already move through, sometimes in a single day. Recognising them is the first step to no longer being run by them.

  • The God Realm bliss, comfort, and subtle pride; the seductive trance of having "arrived," where spiritual bypassing hides.

  • The Titan Realm ambition, competition, and jealousy; the restless drive to compare, win, and defend.

  • The Human Realm longing, doubt, and choice; the realm of seeking — and the one from which awakening is most possible.

  • The Animal Realm habit, instinct, and the pull toward comfort and the familiar; avoidance of what we'd rather not see.

  • The Hungry Ghost Realm craving and insatiable hunger; the ache of "never enough," no matter how much we're fed.

  • The Hell Realm aggression, claustrophobia, and reactivity; the closed loops of anger that torment self and other.
